Choose Your Timing – a Life Skill

tree branches with berries and waterWhat’s happening in this photo? If you were to say raindrops are falling from holly leaves then you would be mistaken. Perceptions are a tricky thing because we actually need lots of information from a multitude of sensory and cognitive sources to arrive at accurate perceptions. The correct answer to what’s happening in this photo is actually all about timing.

This is a photo of ice droplets that remained suspended from the leaves for more than one day.

We humans are quick to move to judgments of what we see. After all, our culture tells us that people with quick judgment are the successful people. But just as it is easy to misjudge the meaning of this photo, I submit that our culture misinforms us of what will bring success. While conducting life coaching sessions, and in my own life, I’m aware of the need to encourage counter balance to quick judgment. We all should take a daily dosage of some kind of anti-culture pill that gives us a desire for timing instead of quick judgment. When we seek a good timing for decisions or judgments, we give perceptive abilities the opportunity to search for full meaning. In fact, I often tell clients to “decide not to decide” for awhile. That suggestion often promotes more accurate perceptions and therefore more mature judgments.

Look at that frozen droplet on the leaf again. Bring yourself to full awareness of what is happening. Stop to realize that transformations will occur with time. With time to fully perceive, a life process of thawing will take place.

That’s what choosing your timing is about as a life skill. It’s about tuning into the process of life. Sometimes our expectations become such strong judgments about how the future will be that we set ourselves up for disappointment. Sometimes it’s best to relax and choose to wait for the right timing.

Peace be within you.
