Being Thankful for Self-Accountability Life Skill

Thanksgiving is right around the corner so it would be appropriate to choose a topic related to being grateful and thankful. What’s one life skill you are particularly thankful to have cultivated over the years? The life skill I appreciate having is self-accountability.

What is a life skill of self-accountability? In my formative years, it was drilled into my character such that the value of this life skill is clear to me.To grasp a societal definition I went to Webster’s dictionary. The word accountability means the quality or state of being accountable, liable, responsible. It means explainable. Though self-accountability wasn’t in the dictionary, the following usage of accountable was stated:  every sane man is accountable to his conscience for his behavior.  This phrase describes why I am particularly thankful for the life skill of self-accountability. Practicing self-accountability brings me peace and an ability to be totally present with the reality before me. When one practices self-accountability, there is alertness about the degree of match between

1.) a well developed thought one has, and

2.) the behavior one exhibits about that thought.

For example, if I think that the federal government should guarantee health care for all citizens but my behavior shows that I don’t have an opinion, there is no match between my thought and my behavior.  If I tell people about this thought then there is a match between thought and behavior.

It is true that sanity, or peace of mind, or a clear conscience flows from this self-accountability life skill. I encourage clients to practice structured methods of self-accountability my voicing aloud the “mental house cleaning” process to someone else. This method makes the internal self talk more tangible or conscious. When two people practice self accountability in a structured time together, I call this co-coaching.

I encourage you to heighten a practice of self-accountability because in time you will experience greater peace. I predict that you too will be grateful for this well cultivated life skill.

Peace be within you this Thanksgiving season,
