Competency in Parenting is a Life Skill

Do you try to parent in such a way that your child will successfully launch into adulthood?  Do you worry that your child will not grow up to be a self sufficient and successful adult? With today’s financial world in turmoil, it’s easy to become overwhelmed about matters for which you have no control. Take that worry energy and redirect it as positive energy. You can use positive energy to insure success in your future and the future of your family. Learning parenting skills will insure a more positive future.  The hardest job on the planet is the one most people never seek any training or competency in doing. Outside intrusion of family values is constant and makes parenting in today’s world the toughest job out there. There are many reasons why parenting the way we were parented is just not enough training to do the job well.  I am co-leading a parenting skills course (see the heading) this month. While reviewing literature and preparing for the course I realized how vital it is to parent with the end goal in mind – successful launching of the child into adulthood. Parents should assume that success comes with gaining knowledge and skills available for today’s world, not just rely on a hand-me-down approach from one’s own parents. What does it look like when competent parenting occurs and there is success?  Good question to ask.

I suggest that you look at a desired outcome or goal such as this:  My young adult child will be able to recognize his needs, take independent responsibility for problem solving and follow through with solutions that build trustworthy relationships in his life and cause him to experience self-trust.

Parenting with competency is the most challenging goal in life to achieve. Take advantage of learning the life skills to do the job and you will be more satisfied with the outcome and your child will profit the rest of his life from your wisdom.

Starting January 2009, I will be offering tele-courses where participants will register at the website and enjoy a course in the comfort of their home.  One course I believe may fit this venue well is a parenting skills course.  I am surveying Milepost readers who might be interested in this format for this course.  Please give me your feedback.

Please remember to call or email for a free consultation when you are ready to begin Life Maps coaching.  A free consultation is also available for those seeking customized seminar programs.

Peace be within you.
